PREFACE&#13;
It is our immense pleasure to publish the proceedings of the 6&#13;
th International Conference on Advances in &#13;
Civil Engineering (ICACE 2022), organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, Chittagong &#13;
University of Engineering &amp; Technology (CUET) on 21-23 December 2022. The aim of this conference &#13;
is to bring together the leading academic experts and professionals from different disciplines of civil &#13;
engineering around the globe to exchange new ideas, share knowledge and explore the cutting-edge &#13;
technological developments in this field of civil engineering. The Editorial Board of ICACE 2022 also &#13;
believes that this prestigious event provides not only a real platform of exchanging and sharing the &#13;
scientific and technical information of relevant fields among all the participants from home and abroad &#13;
but at the same time offers a bridge between academia and industries. &#13;
This proceeding contains accepted papers of the 6th ICACE-2022, covering basic civil engineering &#13;
branches. The book mostly covers some hands-on articles on different realistic problems in civil &#13;
engineering. To be specific, the current applications of advanced civil engineering knowledge in &#13;
developing countries have been highlighted. In general, the topic covers construction and building &#13;
materials, eco-friendly ground improvement, waste disposal technique, waste management, the durability &#13;
of different concrete structures, various aspects of foundation engineering, transport planning, water &#13;
resources management and sustainable development scenarios in developing countries.&#13;
As an event, the conference is considered to be highly successful. From 376 initially submitted abstracts, &#13;
342 abstracts were selected for full paper submission. Out of them, 210 full papers were received from &#13;
the authors, which were undergone through a peer review process. Finally, 153 papers were selected for &#13;
this proceeding. Following another double-blind review process on the finally selected papers, around 50 &#13;
papers will be published in a Springer book series after the conference. &#13;
To conclude, the team expresses its heartiest gratitude to fellow members of different committees for their &#13;
hard and sincere work in materializing the event. The continuing success of this conference series shows &#13;
us the light for the next ICACE 2024. &#13;

<title>NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE BEHAVIOR OF RETROFITTED FLEXURAL CRACKED BEAM WITH EXTERNAL PLATE BONDING</title>

<description>NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE BEHAVIOR OF RETROFITTED FLEXURAL CRACKED BEAM WITH EXTERNAL PLATE BONDING
Kaish, A. B. M. Amrul; Alam, Md. Rabiul; Hassan, Md. Kamrul; Ullah, Shah Neyamat
The aim of this paper is to study the effectiveness of using “External Plate Bonding” in flexural retrofitting&#13;
of reinforced concrete (RC) beam. A simply supported rectangular RC beam is considered for this study.&#13;
The steel plate and the CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) sheet are taken into consideration as&#13;
bonded plates for retrofitting of RC beam. General purpose finite element program (ANSYS 11.0) is used to&#13;
carry out non-linear analysis of uncracked, cracked and retrofitted RC beam. Based on the results obtained&#13;
from numerical investigation it is seen that cracking in RC beam reduces the load carrying capacity of the&#13;
beam. When retrofitting technique using steel or CFRP plate bonding externally is applied, stresses at the&#13;
crack tip reduce significantly. Therefore, external plate bonding could be effectively applied in retrofitting of&#13;
RC beam.

<title>USE OF CRUMB RUBBER IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS</title>
<link>http://103.99.128.19:8080/xmlui/handle/123456789/267</link>
<description>USE OF CRUMB RUBBER IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS
Khan, Azam; Imam, Mahmood Omar; Roy, Anupom Deb
In the modern era, nationwide connectivity is a precondition for the economic and social development. In Bangladesh, flexible pavements count about 98% of paved roads. But these conventional bituminous pavements are highly susceptible to moisture damage, temperature variation and need routine maintenance. So, conventional bitumen modification is a crying need. Bangladesh generates about 90000 tons of non-biodegradable waste tires annually which creates a huge environmental problem. But this waste tires can effectively be incorporated with neat bitumen to make bituminous roads durable, less susceptible to temperature variation and highly resistant to moisture induced damage. Marshall mix design method was used to evaluate the performance of neat bitumen and crumb rubber modified bitumen (CRMB) mixtures whether they meet mix design requirements or not. Water sensitivity analysis was done for both bituminous sample. Loss of stability due to waterlogging was investigated by retained stability test. Resistance to lower temperature cracking and rutting was investigated by indirect tensile strength test. Stripping due to frost and thawing action was investigated by moisture induced damage test. After conducting all tests, it can be concluded that CRMB showed higher softening point and lower stripping value. Water sensitivity tests indicate modified bituminous mixes showed higher resistance to moisture induced damage, lower temperature cracking and rutting which in turn alludes less maintenance work is needed for CRMB road. So, it can be said that CRMB is a sustainable solution for durable and efficient road construction in Bangladesh considering economically and environmentally.

<title>TRAFFIC CONGESTION MONITORING IN THE SELECTED TRANSPORT AXIS OF CHITTAGONG CITY</title>
<link>http://103.99.128.19:8080/xmlui/handle/123456789/266</link>
<description>TRAFFIC CONGESTION MONITORING IN THE SELECTED TRANSPORT AXIS OF CHITTAGONG CITY
Hossain, M. A.; Imam, M. O.
Over the last few years, the transportation problem of Chittagong City has visibly been deteriorating gradually. This study is dedicated to analyzing present traffic congestion in the selected major transport axis of Chittagong city. The traffic study has been conducted on the five most important intersections (Tigrepass, Agrabad, Barik Building, Nimtoli, and CEPZ) by taking into consideration their commercial value and the movement of traffics. Observation of operational conditions indicates that the road continuously suffers from unrestrained movements of pedestrians, motorized and non-motorized vehicles. Again, from the estimated Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) data, it is found that the maximum peak period traffic flow is above 4000 PCU/Hour at Agrabad intersection designating overcrowded road. From the journey speed study, it is found that the average travel speed on the selected roadway is about 10 to 15 K.P.H. throughout the day dropping below 10 K.P.H. during the peak hour indicating severest congestion. The traffic capacity study of the existing roadway showed that the traffic capacity of the roadway is less than the present demand at major survey locations and providing a level of service (LOS)-F with existing traffic flow.
The 4th International Conference on International Conference on Advances in Civil Engineering is a peer-reviewed journal that is published annually one or two in a volume. ICMERE publishes original, unpublished, and review articles, in English on all aspects of research and technology in Mechanical Engineering.
